The driver medical examination
A driver medical examination is an assessment of whether there is anything in your health that affects your ability to drive safely, recorded on a form that a licensing authority, employer or insurer has asked you to have completed.
At East Hills Medical Centre the examination is carried out by a physician at the clinic inside Walmart at East Hills. It follows the form you bring: your medical history, the conditions and medications that bear on driving, and the physical checks the form calls for. The physician then completes the applicable medical documentation and returns it to you.
What the clinic does is the examination and the paperwork. What happens to your licence afterwards is decided by the licensing authority that asked for it.

Who may need a driver medical examination

Drivers of commercial vehicles, buses, taxis and rideshare vehicles are often asked for a driver medical examination when they apply for or renew a licence.

Drivers renewing a licence class

Whatever form you were given — from the licensing authority, an employer, an insurer or a fleet operator. The clinic completes the form you bring; it cannot supply a form it has not been sent.
Medication information
A current list of everything you take, including doses. A pharmacy printout or the bottles themselves are ideal.
Relevant medical information
Recent test results, specialist letters, or applicable medical documentation about a condition the examination is likely to ask about.
Your medical history
Past surgeries, hospital admissions, and any condition affecting your vision, hearing, heart, breathing, blood sugar, sleep or seizures. Write it down before you come if it is a long list.
Health care card and photo ID
Your Alberta Health Care card and a government-issued photo ID, as with any visit to the clinic.

Can I walk in for a driver medical, or do I need an appointment?
A driver medical examination takes longer than an ordinary walk-in visit and involves paperwork, so it is best arranged in advance. Call the clinic and ask — reception will tell you whether it can be fitted in and how much time to allow.
What does the examination involve?
It follows the form you bring. In general terms, a driver medical examination covers your medical history and the things that bear on driving safely — vision, hearing, blood pressure, heart and lung health, neurological function, and any medication or condition that could affect you at the wheel. The physician completes the form based on what the examination finds.
Will the clinic be able to complete my form?
Bring the form and ask.
