Medical care for refugees and refugee claimants
East Hills Medical Centre is a family medicine clinic in southeast Calgary that provides care for refugees and refugee claimants. Arriving in a new country while you also need to see a doctor is hard, and the aim of this page is to tell you plainly what the clinic can do and what to bring, so that your first visit is straightforward.
You can be seen for general medical care, for an illness or an injury, for preventive care and vaccinations, and for medical documentation that needs a physician to complete it. You can come back to the same clinic for follow-up, so the care you start here can continue here.
The clinic is inside the Walmart Supercentre at East Hills, which means one address, one entrance and free parking in the Walmart customer lot. If you take transit, the clinic is in the East Hills shopping area on East Hills Boulevard SE.
What you can be seen for
The same clinic handles same-day illness, ongoing care and documentation, so you do not have to be referred somewhere else for each of them.
General medical care
An appointment with a family physician for whatever you need looked at — a symptom you are worried about, a condition you were treated for before arriving in Canada, or a general check of your health now that you are here.
Illness and injury
Assessment and treatment for everyday illness — fever, cough, sore throat, stomach upset, infections, skin problems — and for minor injuries such as sprains, small cuts and burns.
Preventive care
Health checks, blood pressure, screening discussions, and advice on managing a long-term condition such as diabetes, asthma or high blood pressure.
Vaccinations
Routine immunizations for children and adults, and a review of the vaccinations you have already had if you have a record of them. Call to ask which vaccinations are available.
Care for the whole family
Children, teenagers, adults and older family members can all be seen at this clinic. You do not need separate clinics for different members of your family.
Medical documentation
Where a form or letter needs a physician to complete it, bring it with you and reception will tell you how it is handled. Please bring every page of the form.
Follow-up care
Come back to the same clinic for results, to review how a treatment is working, or to continue care that was started at an earlier visit.
Medication concerns
Bring the medications you are taking, or a photograph of the packages, and the physician can review them with you and discuss what happens next.

Bring what you have. Missing one item does not mean you cannot be seen — but the more of this you bring, the less you will have to explain from memory.
Identification
A government-issued photo ID if you have one, for everyone being seen.
Immigration or refugee documentation
Your refugee claimant document, permit, or the immigration paperwork you were given. Bring the original if you can.
Coverage information
Any health coverage document you hold — an Interim Federal Health Program certificate, or an Alberta Health Care card if you have already been issued one.
Medical documents
Records, test results, vaccination records or hospital letters from Canada or from before you arrived, in whatever language they are written in.
Medication information
The medications you take, including the packages themselves, a pharmacy list or clear photographs of the labels.
Any forms you need completed
If someone has asked for a medical form or letter, bring the complete form with you.

Does the clinic see refugees and refugee claimants?
Yes. East Hills Medical Centre provides medical care for refugees and refugee claimants, including general medical care, assessment of illness and injury, preventive care, vaccinations and medical documentation.
Do I need to be a refugee claimant to be seen?
No. The clinic sees patients at any stage — people who have made a refugee claim, people whose claim is in progress, and people who have already been granted status. Come in during opening hours or call to ask about an appointment.
Is my visit covered by the Interim Federal Health Program?
The clinic cannot tell you from this page what your coverage will be. Coverage depends on individual circumstances and applicable program requirements. Bring any coverage document you hold and call 403-273-2215 to ask before your visit.
What if I do not have an Alberta Health Care card yet?
Bring whatever documentation you do have — your immigration or refugee paperwork and any coverage certificate. Coverage depends on individual circumstances and applicable program requirements. Reception can tell you what is needed for your visit.
What if I do not speak English well?
You are welcome to bring a family member, friend or support worker to help you communicate. Telling reception when you arrive that you would like help with language is completely fine.
Do I need an appointment?
Not for a walk-in visit — you can come in during opening hours. You can also call the clinic or book online if you would rather have a set time. For anything that involves a form, call first.
Can my children be seen at the same visit?
Children can be seen at this clinic. Tell reception when you arrive how many people need to be seen, and bring identification and any documents for each of them.
